National heroes on display in Varna

The Bulgarians holds their national heroes very dear. Just after the long bridge in Varna that connects the Asparuhovo district with the main city area you can find this impressive street art collage on the main road called Wall of Heroes:

The Wall of Heroes in Varna features prominent Bulgarian historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Captain Petko Voivod, Georgi Rakovski, Georgi Benkovski, Raina Knyaginya, Baba Tonka, Paisii Hilendarski, and a representation of the Painting of Slavery. This initiative, known as the Street Revival Gallery, was brought to life by a group of young, patriotic individuals aiming to honor these significant contributors to Bulgarian history and culture.

Georgi Benkovski (1843-1876)

Rayna Knyaginya (1856-1917)

Tonka Obretenova (1812-1893)

A wall painting of a figure shrouded in black, mourning among a pile of skulls. This is a strong visual representation commemorating victims of a tragic event or period in history. The dates written on the wall correspond to significant battles or events in Bulgarian history, many related to struggles against the Ottoman Empire. It's a powerful mural meant to provoke reflection on the past and the sacrifices made for Bulgaria's future.

The mural from the Wall of Heroes in Varna features Paisii Hilendarski (also known as Paisiy of Hilendar), a Bulgarian clergyman and a key figure in the Bulgarian National Revival. He is best known for writing "Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya" (Slavonic-Bulgarian History), the first work of Bulgarian historiography, which played a fundamental role in awakening national consciousness among the Bulgarian people. The text surrounding him in the mural is a passage from this important work, urging Bulgarians to value their history and heritage.

Khan Asparuh of Bulgaria. Asparuh was a ruler of Bulgars in the second half of the 7th century and is credited with the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681
