Dancing in the street in Sofia

Updated: Mar 7

On my trips to Bulgaria, I often come across people dancing together in open squares. The Bulgarians love music (of course) and love to dance and I think it is a way for old and young, and friends and strangers to be together and have fun.

I have seen this in Varna, Plovdiv, and Sofia where this recording is from, so I guess this is very common especially in the summertime.

This is what our AI friend tells about it:

Traditional Bulgarian dances, such as the Horo, where people dance in a circle holding hands, are a significant part of Bulgarian culture and heritage. During cultural festivals, national holidays like the Liberation Day (March 3rd), and other local celebrations, it's not uncommon to see people dancing in the streets as part of the festivities. These events often showcase traditional Bulgarian music and dance, inviting participation from locals and tourists alike.

At that point in time, I didn't have the courage to step in and join myself. But maybe there will be another time. I think it is a very beautiful thing.
