Brutalism in Hamburg

Updated: May 1

I came across this building in Hamburg by chance, which I found very interesting. It is the St. Pauli Bunker on Feldstrasse.

I have always been fascinated by large futuristic buildings, which are described in e.g. the stories of Judge Dredd - a combined police, judge and executioner in the post apocalyptic USA. Buildings that are in themselves small cities that house everything the people who live there need, so they don't have to leave their mega-construction from birth to grave. People live close together in these buildings, for better or for worse, and houses a lot of exciting stories. Even though the Judge Dredd stories are fictional you can actually come across other citylike structures like Kowloon Wall City in Hong Kong which were one of the most densely populated places on Earth. Today, the place is torn down, but the story about the urban city district is very exciting.

In Hamburg you can experience this special bunker, which is the largest of its kind, build by the Nazis during the Second World War. It has a very special history and is one of the mega-constructions that Hitler set in motion. Of other interesting buildings, I also mention the holiday complex Prora, which I have also visited.

Brutalism is a special architectural style most often characterized by giant constructions made of concrete with a rough exterior. Unfortunately, I wasn't inside this time, but it has been put on my bucket list. A restaurant was supposed to be built inside and as part of the green transition in Germany, they have converted the upper half into apartments with green gardens.

At the time of the year there was a very large fair at the foot of the building.
